Because of the location in this country, the level of scarcity has a significant impact on the economy. People live by raising a few cattle, sheep, and goats on the sparse grass. The country exports iron ore and has an active fishing industry, but Mauritania's people would starve without gifts of food and aid from the rest of the world.
