He will need to do it 8 time i think because if you ad 1/2 + 1/2 you get 1 whole cup so 1/2 + 1/2 = 1 1/2 + 1/2 = 1 1/2 + 1/2 = 1 1/2 + 1/2 = 1 so if you add 1/2 cups eight times you should get 4 whole cups
