Richard the Lion Heart refers to Richard I, King of England from 1189 until 1199. Richard received the epithet "Lionheart" because he was believed to have been a great military leader and warrior. He spent much of his life on Crusade, in captivity, or in combat. He was the son of King Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine. To this day, Richard I remains an iconic figure in England and France.
