A risk factor is a specific variable that stimulates the appearance of diseases. In other words, it's a variable that increase the chances to get diseased. For example, smoking is a risk factor, stimulates the appearance of ling cancer.
There are so many types of risk factors, but we can classify them as follows:
- Behavioural: it relates with the specific actions, lifestyles. The person who is in risk, can make a choice, to chance his behaviour or not.
- Physiological: this risk factors are directly related to an individual, his perception, choices and some biological variables.
- Demographic: this depends on population, overpopulation represents a risk factor.
- Environmental: it represents a multidimensional risk factor, can be physical, chemical and biological. For example: access to water.
- Genetic: Some diseases are genetic, which also represents a risk factor.
