Pedro Cabral (d) was a Portuguese navigator who led the expedition that claimed land in South Americal for Portugal. This resulted in the use of Portugal in Brazil today. Pedro Cabral was leading a fleet of thirteen ships and more than 1000 men to India, around Africa using Vasco da Gama's route, when he stopped in Latin America. The place where he stopped is now known as Porto Seguro and is in Northeastern Brazil. This led to later expeditions by Portuguese sailors to harvest Brazilwood.
