The density of a substance is a characteristic of that substance. Therefore, density is a property that can be used to help identify a substance. Properties used to help identify substances are called characteristic properties.
I think density is important because in many different constructions we must know if something is light enough to float (as in boats) or easily be suspended in air (planes)... there are many other ways to use density in an important way.
