America was worried about the spread of communism for several reasons including:
1) Fear of communist infiltration into the US government- The federal government feared that if communist ideas spread around the world, that they could infiltrate the American government and completely change our current government structure.
2) Limited freedom- The system of communism is based on government control of the means of production and the distribution of goods to citizens. Essentially, the governemnt tells businesses what to make and what each citizen will receive. This severly limits the economic freedom of citizens, causing the federal government to fear this system spreading.
