In the field of psychology, such a disorder in which a person has multiple personalities and perceives himself to be another person at times is referred to as dissociative identity disorder.

Various research has shown that those children that experience any kind of physical or sexual trauma during their childhood are more likely to suffer from a dissociative identity disorder. This is because they do not want to live with the assault that they have faced and such stress leads them to believe that they are another person entirely.
