In the case of Brown v. Board of Education, the Supreme court took into account public sentiment and ordered local school systems to desegregate "With all deliberate speed" as opposed to immediately.

The Supreme Court ruled unanimously in the well-known 1954 decision Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka that racial segregation of students in public schools was unconstitutional. Brown v. Board of Education, which helped establish the precedent that "separate but equal" education and other services were in fact not equal at all, was one of the cornerstones of the civil rights movement.

Although the Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board did not directly lead to school desegregation, the South's vehement opposition to it helped to ignite the nascent civil rights movement in the United States.
