George Washington was prominent figure who helped to resolve a dispute between Virginia and Maryland and initiated Mount Vernon conference in which a resolution was drawn up to resolve the dispute between both parties.
The Mount Vernon conference was held in Mount Vernon estate in Fairfax County, Virginia belonging to George Washington. The issues concerning the Potomac and Pocomoke Rivers, and the Chesapeake Bay as well as issues such as toll duties, commerce regulations, fishing rights, and debt collection were discussed and ratified by the representatives from both Maryland and Virginia with George Washington presiding the conference. The Mount Vernon conference then resulted in the thirteen-point proposal titled the Mount Vernon compact. The Mount Vernon Conference also declared that the Potomac river which was under Maryland's jurisdiction to be a shared waterway for both Maryland and Virginia providing fishing rights for both while dividing the cost of building navigation aids, as well as cooperation in defense and combating piracy.
