Embeddedness, in social sciences, is a relational concept and refers to how economy and society can be analyzed through a holistic methodology where economic activity can be analyzed solely through the assessment of social relations and institutions. Furthermore, it is the dependence of a phenomenon - in the sphere of activity such as the economy or the market, an organization, a set of relationships or an individual – on its environment, which can be described alternatively in cultural, social, institutional, or cognitive terms. The exchanges occur within and is regulated by society and does not occur in societal vacuum. The concept of embeddedness was developed by Karl Polanyi.
