Individuals perceive themselves to be self-assured in their thoughts and ideas after successfully resolving the developmental crisis of previous stages.

Erik Erikson's stages of psychosocial developmental crisis, articulated in the second half of the twentieth century. Erikson's stage theory depicts a person progressing through the eight life stages as a result of negotiating biological and sociocultural forces in developmental crisis . The eight stages are defined by the two opposing forces' psychosocial crises. If a person successfully reconciles these forces (favoring the first mentioned attribute in the crisis), they will emerge from the stage with the corresponding virtue. For example, if an infant enters the toddler stage with more trust than mistrust (autonomy vs. shame and doubt), they carry the virtue of hope into the remaining life stages.
