What is Sporophyte ?

The diploid multicellular stage of a plant or alga's life cycle is known as a sporophyte. Each sporophyte cell has a double pair of chromosomes, one set from each parent, because it develops from the zygote created when a haploid egg cell is fertilised by a haploid sperm.

  • Meiosis occurs in diploid sporophyte cells to create haploid spores. A multicellular, haploid gametophyte is produced by the mitotic division of each spore. The gametophyte must undergo mitotic divisions in order to create gametes. The union of two gametes produces the diploid sporophyte.
