In the 1970s, drinking containers for soda and water changed from glass bottles to plastic bottles. Glass bottles were reusable. People bought the bottles, drank the liquid, and returned the empty containers to the store for a refund. The company collected, cleaned, and refilled the glass bottles at bottling plants. In contrast, plastic bottles were made out of Polyethylene terephthalate, making these containers disposable. Consumers bought the containers, drank the soda or water, and threw the plastic containers into the garbage. Unlike glass bottles, this plastic invention was cheap to produce. For every glass bottle, companies could make 20–40 plastic ones. Companies favored the more economic choice, and plastic bottles soon replaced glass bottles.
