He was ecstatic because he made a fire, but he saw it as a "friend" and the " friend" made him think of how lonely he was. 

In Chapter 9, Brian tries to make a fire. He finds this difficult, as he does not know which material to use, how to blow on it, or how to keep it lit. After many failed attempts, Brian is able to create a fire. This excites him, and in his extreme happiness, he begins to think of the fire as a friend. However, thinking of this makes him realize that he is extremely lonely, and has no real friends. He also thinks of his mother and father and wonders what they are doing at the moment.
