The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was the request by Missouri to be admitted to the Union as a Slave State. In other words, it meant that slavery was permitted in the territory.

The Congress then orchestrated a two-part compromise, granting Missouri's request but also admitting Maine as a free state.

Which meant that from then on,  There could be slaves in Missouri, but not in Maine.
