The glow-worm begins its life in the autumn as a pale yellow egg. The freshly laid egg is extremely fragile but within a day its surface has hardened into a shell.

The glow worms use their glowing abdomen to attract male worms in order to mate thus, increasing the rate of reproduction.

What are glow worms?

  • "Glow-worm is the collective name given to female insects that  glow because of bioluminescence."
  • These are segmented insects having more than 2 pair of legs and are similar (look wise) to that of caterpillar.
  • During mating season, they lay down on their back, abdomen facing upwards which glow and attracts/lures the male species.
  • The females does not live much after giving birth to their eggs.

  • "The process by which an organisms give rise to their young ones is called reproduction."

Hence, glowing abdomen helps glow-worms to lure male worms which is responsible for reproductive success.
