I was only 15 years old in April of 1861 when President Lincoln made the call for volunteers. Of course, I was too young to take up a soldier’s gun, but oh, how I wanted to sign on and serve! There I was, caught in those years halfway between a boy and a man. The boy part of me wanted the adventure of it all. It wanted to see the world beyond Kentucky in a powerful way.
