Sequential access method

When the computer reads or writes data starting from the beginning and goes step by step towards the end sequentially, then this is called sequential access method.

Example

The tape storage devices which are typically used for backups are an example of sequential access method.

Advantages

  • Sequential access is faster than random access when the user accesses information in the same sequence every time.
  • The files using the sequential access have a simple organization and structure which makes it easy to modify them.
  • Sequential access provides an ease of exchanging data with other programs such as in the case of data sharing between a database and a spreadsheet.
