The empire kept growing in size an its became difficult to manage it from city of Rome  so the Roman empire was split into two in 285 BC by emperor Diocletian.

Western part of the Empire came to be known as western Roman empire while the Eastern Part was called Eastern Roman empire. The roman empire started to decline after the fall of western Roman empire in 402 BC. It was sacked by Visigothic  King Alaric

The fall of Roman empire was a gradual process, corrupt politicians, infighting and civil wars, attacks from the barbarian tribes and its size were some of the reasons for the fall of Roman Empire.
