Michel is used to getting good grades by taking careful notes and memorizing the information for the tests. However, he is finding that his college classes are different. He has to write several response papers about the reading for his history class and has been receiving poor marks for just paraphrasing the text and not sharing his thoughts on the subject. Michel knows that a few other students have formed a study group to discuss the reading and review each other’s response papers, but decides not to join because he doesn’t know how he would contribute. The study group can help Michel to understand that history is not only about facts but also about different points of view over the same event, specially with political events or wars where there are different point of view because of the different opinions, ways of thinking, and cultural backgrounds that people have. A study group will also help him to clear doubts or help him to construct a critical way of thinking when he compares or discuss his believes or what he studied with his classmates.
