In 1568, possibly as a result of such a struggle, Kongo was temporary overrun by rival warriors from the east known as the Jagas, and Alvaro l Nimi a Lukeni was able to restore Kongo only with Portuguese assistance. In exchange, he allowed them to settle in at Luanda and create the Portuguese colony that became Angola.
