the three fifths compromise benefitted northern states, because it prevented african american slaves from counting as full citizens in southern slave states, and thus prevented large slave states like virginia from having too large a majority in the house of representatives. if slaves didn’t count as much as a non slave, the southern states couldn’t abuse this to have a larger population and thus had less congressional power than the northern states, where slavery was mostly abolished. hope i helped!! :)
