The Southern-Atlantic states are one of of the nine Census Bureau Divisions within the United States. The states that comprises this division are Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and the District of Columbia. Historically, the first state to be explored was Virgina, which was established at Jamestown in 1607. The first record of exploration in Virgina was performed by DeSoto in his trip during 1539 to 1543. A map of the record of that exploration is shown in an attachment.
