Explanation

You decide to read 30 minutes longer than your brother reads.

If your brother reads $x$ number of minutes, then 30 minutes longer than $x$ minutes means $(x+30)$ minutes.

As the number of minutes you read is $y$ , so the equation will be:  $y= x+30$

When your brother reads for 15 minutes, then we will just plug $x=15$ into the above equation. So.....

$y=15+30= 45$

So, you will read for 45 minutes if your brother reads for 15 minutes.
