During the Second World War, he stood out for his leadership as commander of the PT-109 torpedo boat in the South Pacific area. In a reconnaissance, the PT-109 was hit by a Japanese destroyer, which split the launch in two and caused an explosion. His crew swam to an island and survived until rescued. This feat gave him popularity and with it he began his political career.
