An irrational number is any number that cannot be written as a ratio of two integers.
The famous constants [tex] \pi [/tex] and [tex] e [/tex] are two such examples; they can both be approximated by rational numbers ([tex] \pi\approx3.14,\ e\approx2.72 [/tex]), but never expressed exactly.
