What is Genocide?
The crime of genocide is included in the broader category of "crimes against humanity" in contemporary international law, as defined by the Nürnberg Charter of the International Military Tribunal.
The charter gave the tribunal the authority to indict and try Nazi officials for inhumane crimes against civilians, as well as acts of persecution on political, racial, or religious grounds; in doing so, it also helped to criminalize other forms of abusive behavior on a global scale.
