Henry VIII, as all English rulers before him, used to be a Roman Catholic. The woman he married, Catherine of Aragon, was also a Roman Catholic. According to Roman Catholic religion, divorce is not allowed. However, Catherine couldn't give him a child, so he wanted to find a woman who could. That's why he wanted to divorce her - but in order to do that, he had to break with the Catholic Church, and instead formed his own church, the Protestant one.
