Some plantation owners punished enslaved persons when they tried to escape, the enslaved people wanted to escape because they where treated so badly, so they wanted freedom. The "owners" of them didn't want that to happen so they punished them in a very bad way.

TO KEEP THEM AS HELPLESS AS POSSILBE. They would beat them so that they could not run and they work them so hard they were to exausted to run so B.
