The democratic presidential candidate in 1876 won a majority of the popular vote, but he did not win the presidency. true or false

Respuesta :

This is true

The democratic candidate was Samuel J. Tilden from New York and he won more than 200 000 votes more than the republican candidate Rutherford B. Hayes, however, Hayes ended up with one higher electoral vote and became the president. This is the only time out of five when the losing candidate had more popular votes and also had above 50% of votes.
