The range of a function is defined as the complete set of values thay the dependent variable, that is represented in the y-axis, can take.  

It can be observed in the graph provided that its upper bound its located at four (this value is reached but not surpassed this is why the "]" is used to define the interval on the right side). On the other hand, there is not a lower bound and the function keeps on taking negative values towards the infinit.
