Assume that trichomes appear in 1% of the offspring of a particular population. outline a situation in which trichomes would be adaptive based on analysis of the benefits and costs of trichomes. describe what you expect to see in terms of genotypic and phenotypic frequencies over the next 50 generations.

Respuesta :

Trichomes would be adaptive if based on analysis and costs of it by getting much sun and the need of it to lower the temperature. Based on the genotypic and phenotypic frequencies of trichomes over the next 50 generations, a large population of trichomes would adapt to the strong sunlight with increase of trichomes phenotypic production.

In addition, trichomes will developed a function of being able to reduce water loss and reflect radiation to prevent the plant from being affected by these extreme heat conditions.

Trichomes are formed at the cell surface of the plant.

Further Explanation:

Trichomes are developed from the outer layer of cells known as the epidermal cell in the plant. They may be present singly or may be found in the group. If trichome is initially present in some offspring then in the next fifty generation it will be transferred to the offspring as it plays very crucial function in plants.

Trichomes may be:

  1. Unicellular: It can be branched or un-branched
  2. Multicellular

Two types of trichomes are mentioned below:

1. Stinging Hairs:

It has poisonous liquid and comprises of basal bulb like portion from where a tapering, slender and stiff structure comes out. These structure ends in a small sharp point or knob like structure. The tip is little oblique and it can be broken down if touched with high pressure.

2. Scale or peltate hair:

It consist of discoid plate of cells which is formed on a stalk.

The trichome has the cell wall that consist of cellulose and are covered by cuticle. They can also be lignified in some plants.

The trichome begins to develop from a protuberance from an epidermal cell.

Functions of trichomes:

  1. They are involved in controlling the rate of transpiration.
  2. Prevents the plant from heating effect of sunlight.
  3. Prevents the plant from outer injurious agencies.
