Right before World War II officially started, the Soviet Union and Germany signed the German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact. This said that neither country would take up arms against each other for the next 10 years. This also contained  a secret agreement that stated that once Hitler was able to take over Poland, he would allow the Soviet Union to have the eastern portion of Poland.
