The major asked me to have a drink with him and two other officers. We drank rum and it was very friendly. Outside it was getting dark. I asked what time the attack was to be and they said as soon as it was dark. I went back to the drivers. They were sitting in the dugout talking and when I came in they stopped. I gave them each a package of cigarettes, Macedonias, loosely packed cigarettes that spilled tobacco and needed to have the ends twisted before you smoked them. Manera lit his lighter and passed it around. The lighter was shaped like a Fiat radiator. I told them what I had heard. Respuesta :

This excerpt has been taken from “A Farewell to Arms”, a novel written by Ernest Hemingway and published in 1929. It tells the story of Frederic Henry, a young American ambulance driver who is serving in the Italian Army during World War I. In this excerpt, Hemingway uses the character’s Narrative voice, to share with the readers the character’s feelings and thoughts. In other words, Hemingway created a character to tell a story, and this character, Frederic in this case, is the narrator of his own story. By using this technique, Hemingway is able to tell his story from the main character’s point of view.

Direct and Indirect characterization are not possible options in this excerpt since, in both techniques, the author is the narrator of the story and he/she tells the story from another point of view, different from the main character's point of view.

The correct option is Character Narrative.

Further Explanation:

In the field of fiction, a character narrative is a person or a fictional character which is entirely based on a real-life person and a character stands as a representative of a particular class or group of people. A character narrative tells about the story which is going around and all this is told at the background of the picture.  This leads to the author thinking that why a particular character would say that or what he would choose to do these things.

There is another form of character narrative and that is Indirect characterization is also known by the name of implicit characterization. Indirect characterization takes more time to ‘develop a character’ and most of the time it leaves a deeper impression on the mind of the reader as compared to direct statements about who a character actually is like.
