YOu should use the Graham's Law of Diffusion

R1/ R2 = √(M2/ M1)

Helium is R1, air is R2.

I'm not sure if your professor gives density or molar mass for this problem? You need M2 and M1 to solve for the rates of diffusion.

Calculating the diffusion rate of both gases, given Helium's higher rate of diffusion, it will deflate 2.65 times faster than air.

  • Molar mass of helium = 4.00 g/mol

  • Molar mass of air = 28.08 g/mol

  • Pressure rate α 1/√molar mass

Pressure rate of Helium = 1/√4 = 0.5

Pressure rate of air = 1/√28.08 = 1.887

Since helium has a lower pressure rate, then it has a higher rate of diffusion.

Dividing the pressure rates :

  • (0.5 ÷ 1.887) = 2.65

Therefore, Helium will diffuse 2.65 times faster than air.
