When Montag arrives to set fire to their home, Mildred runs off in a taxi, and Montag realizes she was the one who called in the alarm. He realizes she has betrayed him.
Her reaction proves she has no real attachment to Montag or anyone. She is dead inside -- totally emotionless. Montag knows she'll listen to her soap opera and forget about him.
