It is plausible.
Some children indeed can learn to read by themselves and people do learn by reading books. So the way that the Creature has learned language by observing the family and learning himself is possible especially as the Creature is at a level of the child. Not every child indeed does this as most of the kids still need to be thought to read but it is not impossible.
