The abolitionist movement used several different tactics to achieve the emancipation (freeing) of slaves, including:

1) Appealing to individuals religious beliefs- Some members of the abolitionist movement tried to make the argument that enslaving individuals was morally wrong and went against many different core beliefs of Christianity.

2) Using the Declaration of Independence- The wording of the US Declaration of Independence is very clear when it states that "all men are created equal." Many abolitionists used this quote and the US Constitution to point out the hypocrisy of a nation that supposedly believes that all men are treated equal yet enslaves millions of them.
