Meiosis is a process which involves 2 times of cellular division. Each time, chromosomal volume is being halved.
If at first, cell starts with 4 chromosomes ( x x x x ), after the first division which results in 2 daughter cells, each cell will have 2 chromosomes ( x x ), since homologous chromosomes pair up in Meiosis I ( xx xx ), and each pair is broken at Anaphase I.
During Meiosis II ( x x ), sister chromatids are broken at Anaphase II. Each resulting cell will only have 2 chromosomes ( < > ).
So, if you want to check, there will be 4 daughter cells from a single cell after meiosis has occurred. Each daughter cell will have 2 chromosomes ( < > ). At first, there were 4 chromosomes in total ( x x x x ), now, there are ( < > ) ( < > ) ( < > ) ( < > ).
