Compared to World War I, the literary outpouring from World War II can be best described as less realistic than many of the literary works that that appeared after World War I.  In the wake of World War II, many novelists, playwrights, short story writers, and poets delved in the Postmodern style of literary writing, which focused on magic-realism, fantasy, irony, and dark humor, as compared to the brutally realistic literary works that appeared in the wake of World War I.  In the post-World War II era, many American and European poets ended their lives through suicide, including John Berryman, Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, and several others.
The literary work often is seen as less realistic compared to what came from men like Hemingway after WWI. There is often a more romantic tone to the work. Not romance, but more of a romantic longing for the old days feel.

Unfortunately, most American poets ended their lives by suicide. Many had been former soldiers that often wrote of what they had seen, felt, and experienced during their time abroad. Many had no one to turn to for help and chose to end their lives.
