According to a survey performed by the Brookings Institution in 2012 called "Americans on the Middle East", the majority of Americans would want to see Middle Eastern Countries become more democratic, even if it meant that these would eventually oppose US policies (50% in favor of this versus 42% who oppose).
Overall results from this survey show that a slight majority of Americans favor the government's efforts to stabilizing the political environment in the middle east versus getting involved in more armed conflicts. For example, this study shows that 60% favor the increase of sanctions towards Iran. On the other hand, only 13% favor sending more troops to that region.

The Americans responded in the Truman Doctrine by pledging aid to both countries and support for their independence and territorial integrity. In 1953 the United States joined Britain in boycotting Iranian oil after it was nationalized by Prime Minister Muhammad Musaddiq (1882–1964).
