Hormones are chemical messengers secreted from endocrine glands such as thyroid, pituitary gland into blood or extracellular fluid that affect the functioning of cells at distant sites. However, many of the hormones also affect neighboring cells or even have effects on the same cells that secreted the hormone. There are three hormonal actions.
In paracrine action, the hormone acts locally. The hormone diffuses from its source and acts on neighborhood target cells. Whereas, in autocrine action, the hormone acts on the same cell from where it is produced.
