How did some Southern states respond to the Brown v. Board decision?

A) school systems refused to honor the ruling and continued to operate separate but equal schools until 1977
B) some states threatened to take the case to the United Nation’s international court of appeals
C) school systems were shut down instead of integrating schools
D) southern states attempted to nullify the Supreme Court’s decision which led to the nullification crisis

Respuesta :

C.  Some school systems were shut down instead of integrating schools.

For example, in Prince Edward County, Virginia, the school system was shut down for five years rather than integrate their schools.  Other school systems in Virginia were also part of this "massive resistance" movement against the Brown v. Board decision -- a strategy declared by Virginia Senator Robert Byrd.
