It is probably easiest to understand if we convert both measurements to inches so we are working with only one measurement instead of two.

1 foot= 12 inches

multiply feet by inches to equal total inches

8 ft * 12 inches= 96 inches

7 ft * 12 inches= 84 + 10 3/4= 94 3/4

Subtract the difference:
= 96 - 94.75
= 1.25 = 1 1/4 inches cut off

ANSWER: 1 1/4 inches were cut off
