In December 1979, when the Soviet Union sent thousands of combat troops and established a "puppet" government, in Afghanistan, the U.S. government immediately considered it a threat to peace. The invasion was likely to expand into strategic neighboring countries such as Iran and Pakistan, threatening their stability and resulting in the USSR gaining control over much of the world’s oil supplies.

When Soviet Military intervened in Afghanistan, There was a strong reaction which came out against this intervention from President of United States, Jimmy Carter and he requested Senate to postpone its action of SALT- 2 nuclear weapons treaty and also he recalled U.S Ambassador to soviet Union back. All these actions of President Carter indicated that Russian intervention in Afghanistan had damaged the relationship between United States and Soviet Union. This relation between two countries came to a breaking point when Soviet Invaded Afghanistan and established a Puppet government there. The actions which President Jimmy Carter took against Soviets made it clear that any military intervention by Soviets in Afghanistan was unacceptable to united States. In addition to this, United States also decided to impose new trade restrictions on Soviet Union and also decided to Boycott summer Olympics of 1980 which were going to held in Moscow. The reason behind all this retaliation from United States against Soviet union was that It was believed by President Jimmy Carter that Soviets will further expand their authority on other neighboring countries also and that was seen as threat by President of United States.
