I'm pretty positive that C is the right answer because the federal government got bigger after the Civil War which would mean that federal government had influence on peoples lives. The rest just don't make sense. Sorry if this is wrong but I'm really positive its C.
In the years immediately following the Civil War, from 1865 through 1877, numerous US administrations worked to rebuild society, especially in the former Confederate states, by creating and defending the legal rights of the newly liberated black people. This period is referred to as reconstruction.
What altered following the Civil War?
The abolition of slavery (13th), the granting of equal citizenship (14th), and the granting of voting rights (15th) to former slaves—all within a five-year period—were the most drastic and quick social and political changes in American history.
The promise of equal rights was partially fulfilled during the difficult 12-year Reconstruction period following the Civil War, after which it was completely abandoned. This transition of more than 4 million slaves into citizens with equal rights became the main problem.
