In 1911, British explorer Robert Scott and his party died on their return trip from the South Pole. Scott arrived in the South Pole on 17 January 1912, just five weeks after Roald Amundsen's Norwegian expedition. On their return journey, Scott's party managed to prove that Antarctica was once forested and joined to other continents by discovering several fossil plants. He died in 1912 alongside with his party.
