To find the total area. find the sum of the area of the rectangle and the triangle.
Rectangle area: A = lw or A = 8cm(4cm) = 32 cm²
Triangle Area is defined by A = [tex] \frac{b(h)}{2} [/tex] where b = base of the triangle and h = height of the triangle. Since our triangle is a right triangle, the base and height of the triangle are the two legs of the right triangle. One of the legs has a measure of 3, but we don't see the measure of the other leg. It is actually 4cm though... Do you see that it is just the opposite side of the rectangle already showing a measure of 4 cm.. We know that opposite sides of rectangles have the same measure.
So in our triangle b = 3cm and h = 4cm and A = [tex] \frac{3(4)}{2} [/tex]= 6cm²
Total Area would be A = 32cm² + 6cm² = 38cm²
