Commodore Matthew Perry believed that the only way to convince Japan to accept Western trade was to show that they were willing to use firepower. The letter was addressed to the Emperor and not the Shogun. They provided gifts like wines, a telescope and a steam locomotive to show western superiority.

Initially, the Koreans had mixed feelings about the Japanese but it soon turned sour and a massive anti-Japanese movement. Koreans were seen as an equal entity as compared to the Japanese but as their expansion lead up to WWII they moved to fully assimilate the Korean people. The violent uprising though was crushed by the Japanese.

Although not all parts of Latin America gained independence through violence, many were. The Latin American wards of independence took place in from the 18th century to the 19th century. There were several revolutions that took place. Canada took the longer route, but it was achieved more peacefully.
